What a welding starter kit really costs, measured against the welder
A flux core starter kit costs about four and a half times the cheapest welder. Every item priced relative to the machine, with the method stated.
The welder is the item you shop for, so it feels like the cost. It is not. By the time you can safely run a first bead, you have bought a helmet, gloves, something to cover your arms, a grinder, wire and an extinguisher, and with a budget welder those outweigh the machine several times over.
With the cheapest welder in our beginner roundup, a complete flux core starter kit comes to about four and a half times the price of the welder. The machine is under a quarter of the bill. Buy the safety gear first and size the welder to what is left.
The kit, in units of one budget welder

So the machine is 1.0 out of about 4.5, before the small unpriced items.
What changes if you spend more on the welder
Swap the budget machine for the Lincoln 90i FC, the one machine in our roundup rated by its maker for a 20 amp household circuit. It costs about 3.0 units. The kit becomes about 6.5, and the welder is a little under half of it. The rest of the list does not change, because a helmet does not care what it is looking at.

Adding gas
Gas mig gives cleaner welds on thinner metal, and adds three costs:

We did not price cylinders, because they are bought or leased from a local gas supplier and vary by region and size. Ask for the price of an owned, exchangeable cylinder before you budget. What to ask for is in mig welding gas.
The cost nobody lists: the circuit
Most welders sold as 110 volt list far more input current than a household outlet supplies. If the machine you want needs a new circuit, that is a real cost, and one we cannot estimate for your house. Get a quote before you order: can my panel handle a welder lists what to note down first. A welder rated for the outlet you already have costs more than a budget one and can still be the cheaper route.
Steel
Practice metal is the cheapest part if you buy it right. Offcuts sold by weight at a steel yard usually cost much less than hardware store lengths. A few visits’ worth will see you through weeks of practice and the first small projects in welding projects for beginners.
Order of purchase
- Helmet, gloves, glasses, extinguisher, and long sleeves.
- The welder, chosen for your outlet.
- Wire, grinder and discs, hammer and brush.
- Steel and a couple of clamps.
- Jacket, more clamps, a cart, and gas if you go that way.

Prices move weekly and differ by retailer, so a figure printed here would be wrong soon after. Ratios hold up better. What can I leave out to save money?
Not the helmet, gloves, covered skin, safety glasses or extinguisher. You can start with heavy cotton long sleeves you already own in place of a jacket, borrow an angle grinder, and buy clamps as projects need them. A cheaper welder is also a reasonable saving for learning on thin steel, as long as you know what its manual says about your outlet.
How much more does gas mig cost to start than flux core?
The machine has to be gas capable, which in our checks starts at about one and a half times the cheapest flux core welder. Then add a cylinder, its first fill and possibly a regulator, all priced locally. Flux core wire usually costs more per pound than solid wire, so over a lot of welding the gap narrows. For a first year of occasional projects, flux core is the cheaper start.
