Dual voltage welders: one machine, two sets of specs
A dual voltage welder runs on 120 or 240 volts, but its output, duty cycle and breaker change with the plug. Read both ratings before you buy.
Dual voltage means the welder can plug into an ordinary 120 volt outlet or a 240 volt outlet, usually by changing the plug on the end of the cord. Listings present it as one machine that works anywhere.
It is more accurate to think of it as two machines in one case. Output, duty cycle and the circuit it needs all change with the plug, and the headline specs are nearly always the 240 volt ones.
Two real machines, both ratings
| Machine and input | Rated output | Duty cycle | Minutes of arc per ten | Published breaker or circuit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobart Handler 210 MVP, 115 V | 90 A | 20 percent | 2 | 20 A individual branch circuit |
| Hobart Handler 210 MVP, 230 V | 150 A | 30 percent | 3 | See manual section 5-8 |
| Lincoln POWER MIG 210 MP, 120 V | 100 A | 40 percent | 4 | 20 A |
| Lincoln POWER MIG 210 MP, 230 V | 200 A | 25 percent | 2.5 | 40 A |
Sources, checked 2026-09-19: the Hobart Handler 210 MVP owner’s manual OM-260 274 (ManualsLib) and the Lincoln Electric POWER MIG 210 MP operator’s manual, product number K3963-1 (ManualsLib). Duty cycle is the share of a ten minute window the machine can weld before cooling, rated at 104 F. More in duty cycle as minutes of arc.
Read across the Lincoln rows. On 230 volts, rated output doubles. Duty cycle at that higher output is lower, because the machine is working harder. Neither row is better in the abstract. They describe different jobs.
What to check on a listing
- Rated output and duty cycle at 120 volts. If the listing gives only one duty cycle figure, assume it is the 240 volt one until the manual says otherwise. If the manual gives no 120 volt rating, our tables say “Not published”.
- The circuit each input needs. A 120 volt rating usually assumes a 20 amp circuit with nothing else on it. Many garage outlets are 15 amp and shared. See what size breaker a welder needs.
- How the plug changes. Some machines ship with interchangeable plugs. Others ship with an adapter lead. Use only what the manufacturer supplies or specifies.
- Processes at each voltage. On a multiprocess machine (one that does mig, stick and tig), check that the process you want is rated on the input you have.
We rank five dual voltage machines on these numbers in best multiprocess welders.
Who it suits
- You rent, or have no 240 volt outlet yet, and want to start on thin material now.
- You expect to add a 240 volt circuit later and do not want to buy twice.
- The machine will travel between a shop and places with only household outlets.
If the welder will live beside an existing 240 volt welder outlet, you are paying for a plug you will not use. A 240 volt only machine is a fair choice there.
The boundary
Do not use adapters to borrow a dryer or range outlet. Those circuits were planned for a different appliance. Take the welder’s manual to a licensed electrician. We compare the two inputs in more depth in 110v vs 220v welders, and list published draw per machine in welder amp draw.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dual voltage welder?
A welder that accepts either a 120 volt household outlet or a 240 volt outlet, usually by swapping the plug on the power cord. It is one machine with two ratings: output, duty cycle and the required circuit all differ between the two inputs.
Does a dual voltage welder give full power on 120 volts?
No. On 120 volts the outlet limits the machine. The Hobart Handler 210 MVP is rated 90 amps at 20 percent on 115 volts and 150 amps at 30 percent on 230. The Lincoln POWER MIG 210 MP is rated 100 amps at 40 percent on 120 volts and 200 amps at 25 percent on 230.
What breaker does a dual voltage welder need?
One per input, as published in the manual. Lincoln's table for the POWER MIG 210 MP lists a 20 amp fuse or breaker on 120 volts and 40 amp on 230 volts. Hobart requires a 20 ampere individual branch circuit for the Handler 210 MVP on 115 volts. Have a licensed electrician plan the circuit from the manual.
